Twitter Lists

Twitter lists are useful when you want to classify different accounts based on the stuff they tweet. For example you can have a list called "Health Tips" in which you can add those accounts who tweet information related to health. You can have different lists for different topics. You can either keep the list private so that only you can access it or you can keep it public so that everyone can access it. When the list is public, anyone can view it and also subscribe to it.

Direct Messages for Twitter (android)

Direct Messages

Direct Messages popularly known as DM are nothing but personal messages that can be sent to someone's inbox. DM allows you to chat with other twitter users. You can also create chat groups and have discussions.

There are a few different of ways in which you can send a DM to others who have DM enabled.

1. From your inbox

From your homepage click on the mail icon at the bottom right of the screen to open your inbox.
This is where you can find all the messages that you send and receive.

Once in the inbox, you can click on the new mail icon a the bottom to send a new message to someone. You will see a list of accounts that you can send a DM to. You can also search for accounts and groups from the search bar at the top.
In the example below I have selected an account and as you can see its name appears in the top bar. If you select multiple accounts you will be adding them all into a single chat window i.e a chat group. If you click again on any account that you have selected, you will be able to deselect that account.

After you select the correct account just click Next and the chat window will open,  type your message there and send.

2. From somebody's profile page

For example, I want to send a DM to the handle Twitter video, so I will find and open their profile page. They have DM enabled because there is a mail icon visible next to the Follow button.
Also notice that I am able to DM them even if I don't follow their account.

After clicking on the mail icon a chat window will open.

3. Share something via DM

If you click on he share icon below any tweet, there is an option to share the tweet via DM. If you select it, it works just as the first method.

Privacy settings for DM

Let us see how you can adjust some of the twitter settings for Direct Messages.
You can change settings to receive messages from anyone or just specific people.

Click on your profile pic on the homepage.  From the menu that expands, click on Settings and privacy.

From the Next window, click on Privacy and safety.

Then click on Direct Messages

Here you will find options to change settings for DM.

If you check the box next to Receive message requests, you will be able yo receive DMs from any account on twitter, whether you follow them or not. Even if somebody doesn't follow you, they will be able to DM you.

If you leave the box unchecked then no random accounts can message you. Although, only the accounts that you follow might be able to send you a DM. Note that even your followers won't be able o DM you unless you follow them.

Once you send or receive a DM from someone, then you will always be able to exchange messages irrespective of settings (Unless you block them! )

Note for group conversations:

You cannot be in a group chat with someone whom you have blocked. So if you are already in a group chat and other group member wants to add an account XYZ to the group they won't be able to do so if you have blocked XYZ. Same is true for your account if somebody has blocked you.

If you are in a group chat and another group member suddenly blocks you, you will be kicked out of the conversation. Once you are out you will lose conversation history for that group. You won't be able to rejoin the conversation unless you are unblocked.
